Copywriting, journalism and Google Certified SEO training

I started as a journalist at a news agency, Adfero, writing for Microsoft, Nuffield Health, Coca-Cola and the London Stock Exchange amongst other clients.

I then moved onto the BBC where I worked on a series of editorial and data visualisation projects involving iPlayer, Radio Drama, Comedy Online.

At Which? I specialised in search optimising pages, data visualisation and writing complex work in plain English. I trained others in how to do so and created a range of guides and training programmes.

Feel free to check out my examples of work.

Google Analytics, Omniture and data visualisation

At Which? I used Google Analytics and Omniture on a daily basis to produce regular and ad hoc reports. As such I am highly skilled at extracting different reports, manipulating data in spreadsheets such as Excel and Google Fusion tables to gain insight.

Combined with my background in archaeology and anthropology I make sure data is not just about the numbers but about the audience and how this relates to people.

Through this insight I made sure that Which? increased its readership, conversion and SEO ranking.

Script reviewing, writing and performing

I have read scripts for the BBC and continue to read and rate scripts for festivals. I also passed the BBC Assistant Producer course. If you’d like me to read your script and give feedback please get in touch.

I write my own scripts have written for the stage and performed at Cambridge and the Edinburgh festival. I am a member of the BBC Radio Theatre Group and have been producer and director of radio serials. And if you listen hard enough you will also hear me in crowd scenes of one or two Radio 4 productions.

Working at BBC Comedy Online I designed and built website, edited video in Final Cut Pro and uploaded it through the rather complicated CMS. I also read scripts and helped design online games in support of TV programmes.

Considered Words

I like studying why people do what they do and sharing the information. I set this site up to help more people improve their writing, whether they are writing in business, want to write better, or understand better why we write and what we like, or just want to know what the best books on writing are.

Technology – from cheaper books and ebooks, to cinema, TV and radio – means that we are exposed to more stories that at any point in history. But the internet now means our own stories are easier to tell to a wide audience, whether it is in an email, on our website or through videos and podcasts.

While the main way of telling stories on the internet is through writing, YouTube and other video sites still use storytelling skills. This is why we need to improve our writing and storytelling skills.

I created Considered Words to share the research and discoveries made while studying writing and I’m fortunate enough to have friends, colleagues and web writers who are equally keen to share their thoughts on writing.
