Beeb to broadcast theatre

Looks like the BBC is getting away from the soundstage and onto the stage as the broadcaster has announced it’s to transmit stage productions.

A new online channel called The Space is being set up by the BBC and Arts Council England to show arts programmes – among them productions by the Bristol Old Vic, Birmingham Opera Company, Shakespeare’s Globe and Saddler’s Wells as well as other theatres.

It’s not a new digital channel, but who knows where it could lead. Let’s hope that it has a better conversion rate of online-to-broadcast than the under-rated BBC Film Network and Channel 4’s Aardman venture 4mations.

I know one person who will be happy – Sam Walters lamented the lack of broadcast theatre on the BBC so this may go some way to addressing this.
